Random English

You know how a lot of Japanese songs throw in random English that may or may not make sense...?

Quick tangent: two of my top ten all time random English bits from songs are "motor dolphin" from a song called "kimi wa suteki na motor dolphin" (w t f?) and "to be going your days grow up" from one of the Nadesico songs... anyway...

Apparently it doesn't just afflict songwriters; it's been spreading to ad campaign writers too.

Witness the phrase:
"This cute mild curry uses 100% Japanese apple and cheerful hamster."

@_@;;; I SO hope this has to do with some insane jump-on-the-Hamtaro-bandwagon tie-in and doesn't mean the hamsters are actually in the curry... or maybe they were looking for a "hip" take on the word "ham"... or... gah...

Wanna talk some funny engrish from engrish.com eh? [img]tongue.gif[/img] One of my all time favorites was a scan of an import eric clapton album. It came out as eric crapton. Caption was "she don't rye, she don't rye, she don't rye..." (for those who don't know the song, it's from "cocaine" and it's "She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie...cocaine..."

^___^ And then for the retro anime watchers in the crowd, there's also Carnival Babel from Blue Seed, where the lyrics start out with:

"mysterious Tokyo take it easy dangerous night mysterious Tokyo pick me up foxy night game"

...whee.

Of course, it's no worse than the Japanese I've seen people throw randomly at fanfic, but on the other hand fanfic writers don't have editors and aren't getting published, and to some people the word "fanfic" is considered a synonym for "horrible writing and nonexistent editing" in itself. Not entirely without justification, given a statistical cross-sampling of the fanfic out there... Nobody expects fanfic writers to get anything right, whereas people making music for televised shows really ought to get some kind of quality control check.

(And I say this fully aware that I'm also a fanfic writer; I just tend to really hope and pray I hit more at the high end than the low end of the fanfic bell curve... ^^; [img]wink.gif[/img]
